DEBATING 2013 DEBATE 1 Our first debate of the year was on the subject of duck-shooting. Some New Zealand farmers see ducks as pests and Kea 2 student Sean Mc Grath has had experience of duck-shooting. Other students in the class have strong views on animal cruelty.
Connor Tyer was chosen as debate chairperson for the first debate. Two teams of three, prepared debate speeches after in-depth research.
The proposal: Duck shooting is a sport and should be allowed Proposers: Sean, Ethan and Tonu Opposers: Kiana, Darryck and Didar DEBATE RESULT: THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT DUCK SHOOTING SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED
Here are some highlights from the debate:
Ryan C asking Kiana whether she thought slaughterhouses that tortured animals were better or worse than gunshot deaths
Ethan explaining that duck shooting was 'cultural' like Japanese whale killing (this was necessary because of a question from Abbie about his speech).
Cale Perry saying to Kiana " If you're not a vegetarian are you not eating the things that you love and want to protect"
and Ryan saying to Kiana " Is it not ironic that you are against duck shooting but for eating meat?
When Kiana said "it's been proven that 275 000 ducks are shot, & Sean countered "How do they know.. do they go round and count them?"
Sean: "Shooting makes you responsible and aware"
Sean: "Nature is more cruel than man."
Sean: " ..... having a great time.... it's all in one (the whole package) ... it's a part of life..."
Cale: " How do we know that they feel pain in their brains ..not just their bodies"
Sean (on the fact that all carcasses are used for food " so the ducks aren't getting wasted...." !!
Ethan: "Do we get butlers?" (should be "Do we get rebutalls")
